Joseph Wright of Derby The Alchemist

The Philosopher's Stone is the goal of all Alchemists. It is a legendary substance said to be capable of turning mercury into gold (or in some tales silver) In alchemy, the alchemical term for this process is chrysopoeia which literally means transmutation into gold, the Chrysopoeia is taken from the Greek words for "gold" (χρυσός, 'khrusos',) and "to make"  (ποιεῖν, 'poiein'). It is also used to symbolically indicates the creation of the eponymous philosopher's stone and the completion of the Great Work.
