Orias is the 59th demon of the Goetia.
Overview[]
He is a great Marquis and appears in the form of a lion that holds two great serpents in his right hand with a snake's tail riding a mighty horse. His office is to teach the virtues of the stars and know the mansions of the planets.
He also transforms men and gives dignities, places, confirmations, and the favor of friends and foes. He governs 30 legions of demons.
Orias in the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum[]
The Pseudomonarchia daemonum, or False Monarchy of Demons, by the Dutch occultist Johann Weyer, was published as an appendix to his book titled De praestigiis daemonum, or On the Tricks of Demons, in 1577. The description of Orias from the Pseudomonarchia daemonum is as follows:
| “ | Orias is a great marquesse, and is seene as a lion riding on a strong horsse, with a serpents taile, and carrieth in his right hand two great serpents hissing, he knoweth the mansion of planets and perfectlie teacheth the vertues of the starres, he transformeth men, he giveth dignities, prelacies, and confirmations, and also the favour of freends and foes, and hath under him thirtie legions.[1] | ” |
Orias in the Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis (Ars Goetia)[]
The Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis or Lesser Key of Solomon is an anonymously written book of demonology that is believed to have been complied sometime during the 17th century CE. The work is divided into five books, the first of which, known as the Ars Goetia, lists 72 demons. The Ars Goetia is heavily based off of Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia daemonum.
In 1904, the British occultist and founder of the religion of Thelema, Aleister Crowley, published a version of the Lesser Key of Solomon which was translated by another British occultist, Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, and contained additional invocations added by Crowley. The Ars Goetia's passage on Orias from the 1904 version is as follows:

He is a Great Marquis, and appeareth in the Form of a Lion,26 riding upon a Horse Mighty and Strong, with a Serpent’s Tail; and he holdeth in his Right Hand two Great Serpents hissing. His Office is to teach the Virtues of the Stars, and to know the Mansions of the Planets, and how to understand their Virtues. He also transformeth Men, and he giveth Dignities, Prelacies, and Confirmation thereof; also Favour with Friends and with Foes. Orias in the Dictionnaire Infernal[]
The Infernal Dictionary is a book of demonology written in 1818 by the French occultist Jacques Auguste Simon Collin de Plancy. The entry for Orias is as follows:
| “ | Orias, demon of astrologers and soothsayers, great marquis of the infernal empire. He appears in the guise of a furious lion, seated on a horse with a serpent's tail. He carries a viper in each hand. He knows astronomy and teaches astrology. He transforms men at will, grants them dignities and titles, and commands thirty legions.[3] | ” |
