Nergal, also known as Nirgal, Nirgali, Erra and Irra, was the Mesopotamian God of War, plague, death, and disease.

Mythology[]

Martian God[]

During Chaldean times the name Nergal was used as the name for the planet Mars, in the Mandaeism religion Mars is called Nirig that is clearly derived from Nergal.

Outside of Mesopotamia[]

  • Nergal was worshiped by the Hurrians, along with other stranger deities like: Taru, Tiwaz, Some Vedic deities, besides he was identified with the local Hurrian gods of war.
  • During Parthian times Nergal had a cult by the Persians.
  • In the Book of Kings, Nergal is mentioned as one of several gods.

Nergal had many wives, but usually he was represented as consort of Ereshkigal.
