Morax, or Marax, is the 21st spirit of the Ars Goetia. He is a great Earl and a President and appears as a great bull with a man's face.

Overview[]

His office is to make man knowledgeable in astronomy and all other liberal sciences. He can bestow wise familiars and knows the virtues of herbs and precious stones. He governs 36 legions of spirits. According to the Grand Grimoire, he is a direct subordinate of Sargatanas.

Morax in Christian and Occult Demonologies[]

Throughout history multiple formalized classifications of demons have been proposed. None of them however are considered canon by modern mainstream Christian denominations. Instead, lists of formalized demonologies tend to remain popular in occult traditions.

Morax in the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum[]

The Pseudomonarchia daemonum, or False Monarchy of Demons, by the Dutch occultist Johann Weyer, was published as an appendix to his book titled De praestigiis daemonum, or On the Tricks of Demons, in 1577. The description of Morax from the Pseudomonarchia daemonum is as follows:

"Morax, alias Foraii, a great earle and a president, he is seene like a bull, and if he take unto him a mans face, he maketh men wonderfull cunning in astronomie, & in all the liberall sciences: he giveth good familiars and wise, knowing the power & vertue of hearbs and stones which are pretious, and ruleth thirtie six legions.[1]"

Morax in the Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis (Ars Goetia)[]

The Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis or Lesser Key of Solomon is an anonymously written book of demonology that is believed to have been complied sometime during the 17th century CE. The work is divided into five books, the first of which, known as the Ars Goetia, lists seventy-two demons. The Ars Goetia is heavily based off of Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia daemonum. The Ars Goetia's passage on Morax is as follows:

"The Twenty-first Spirit is Marax. He is a Great Earl and President. He appeareth like a great Bull with a Man’s face. His office is to make Men very knowing in Astronomy, and all other Liberal Sciences; also he can give good Familiars, and wise, knowing the virtues of Herbs and Stones which be precious. He governeth 30 Legions of Spirits, and his Seal is this, which must be made and worn as aforesaid, etc.[2]"
