Minthe (or Menthe) is a water Nymph in Greek Mythology who presides over the river of the underworld. She is associated with the Mint plant which is named after her.

Myths & Legends[]

While Minthe resided in the river of the underworld, it was said that she had a relationship with Hades. In some stories this was before he was married to Persephone. However, in others after Hades and Persephone are married, Menthe who is in love with Hades tries to get him to have an affair, but Persephone finds out. Angry, Persephone turns Menthe into the Mint plant by stepping on her with all her might. In some versions, it's Hades who was attracted by Menthe's beauty and had an affair.
