Merope (Ancient Greek: Μερόπη) was the name of one of the Pleiades, seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione. She was the mother of Ornytion and Glaucus by Sisyphus, making her grandmother to Bellerophon.

Merope was one of seven Pleaides; the others were her sisters Maia, Taygete, Alcyone, Celaeno, Sterope and Electra. The seven sisters were transformed into stars by Zeus, to save them from the advances of Orion. In some legends, Electra faded away, distressed by the sack of Troy, but in others it is Merope, ashamed of her relationship with the mortal Sisyphus while her sisters were pursued by gods.

Etymology[]

From μέρος (méros, “lot, fate”) +‎ ὄψ (óps, “eye, face”).
