In Roman Mythology, Mare is the primordial goddess of the sea. Hyginus is the only author to attest this deity.

The Roman mythographer Hyginus, in the preface to his Fabulae, calls Mare the daughter of Ether and Dies (Day), and thus the sister of Terra (Earth) and Caelus (Sky). With her male counterpart Pontus, she spawns the species of fish. [1]
