Marduk (Hebrew: Nimrod, Sumerian: Namarutu) was the an ancient Mesopotamian god and patron of Babylon. He was the son of Enki and Ninhursag. He defeated Tiamat (his great-great-great-grandmother), the personification of salt water and chaos, and then Kingu (her son), her co-ruler.
Origin[]
The origin of Marduk is a mistery, but presumably Marduk can come from the Akkadian god of rains and stroms Adad, which makes clear its Akkadian origin.
Bel[]
During the first millennium BC Marduk was syncretized with Enlil and Tammuz, also acquiring the title Bel (That was an adaptation of the semitic Title Baal) during the first milenium BC, Bel also was use by Athur (the rival of Marduk).
