Lyngbakr (Old Norse: lyngi, "heather" + bakr, "back") or Lyngbakur is a sea monster from Norse mythology that is mentioned in the Ǫrvar-Odds saga and that apparently inhabited the waters off the coast of Greenland and Helluland along with another creature called hafgufa. According to the saga, it pretended to be an island and when the sailors landed, it sank into the abyss, taking the entire crew with it. Lyngbakr was defined as the largest of the whales and hafgufa the creature that gave rise to all the beasts of the ocean.
