Ipos is an Earl and a Prince of Hell. He has control over 36 legions of demons and is the 22nd demon listed in the Ars Goetia.
His appearance is that of a hybrid between an angel (body), a lion (head/body), a goose or vulture (legs, sometimes the head) and a hare (tail). He knows and can reveal all things past, present and future and he can make men witty and valiant. According to the Grand Grimoire, he is a direct subordinate of Nebiros.
Ipos in the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum[]
The Pseudomonarchia daemonum, or False Monarchy of Demons, by the Dutch occultist Johann Weyer, was published as an appendix to his book titled De praestigiis daemonum, or On the Tricks of Demons, in 1577. The description of Ipos from the Pseudomonarchia daemonum is as follows:
| ā | Ipos [*Ipes], alias Ayporos [*Ayperos], is a great earle and a prince, appeering in the shape of an angell, and yet indeed more obscure and filthie than a lion, with a lions head, a gooses feet, and a hares taile: he knoweth things to come and past, he maketh a man wittie, and bold, and hath under his jurisdiction thirtie six legions. | ā |
Ipos in the Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis (Ars Goetia)[]
The Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis or Lesser Key of Solomon is an anonymously written book of demonology that is believed to have been complied sometime during the 17th century CE. The work is divided into five books, the first of which, known as the Ars Goetia, lists 72 demons. The Ars Goetia is heavily based off of Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia daemonum.
In 1904, the British occultist and founder of the religion of Thelema, Aleister Crowley, published a version of the Lesser Key of Solomon which was translated by another British occultist, Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, and contained additional invocations added by Crowley. The Ars Goetia's passage on Ipos from the 1904 version is as follows:
| ā | IPOS. - The Twenty-second Spirit is lpos. He is an Earl, and a Mighty Prince, and appeareth in the form of an Angel with a Lion's Head, and a Goose's Foot, and Hare's Tail. He knoweth all things Past, Present, and to Come. He maketh men witty and bold. He governeth 36 Legions of Spirits. His Seal is this, which thou shalt wear, etc,.[2] | ā |
Ipos in the Dictionnaire Infernal[]
The Infernal Dictionary is a book of demonology written in 1818 by the French occultist Jacques Auguste Simon Collin de Plancy. The entry for Ipos is as follows:
| ā | Ayperos, count of the infernal empire. He is the same as Ipes. See Ipes.[3] | ā |
| ā | Ipes or Ayperos, prince and count of hell; he appears in the form of an angel, sometimes in that of a lion, with the head and feet of a goose and a hare's tail, which is a bit short; he knows the past and the future, gives genius and audacity to men, and commands thirty-six legions.[4] | ā |
