Hermaphroditus was a child of Aphrodite and Hermes.
Legend[]
Hermaphroditus was born a remarkably handsome boy whom the naiad Salmacis prayed to be bonded to forever. One of the gods, in answer to her prayer, merged their two forms into one and turned them into a hermaphrodite, which is considered to be the origin of the name.
Hermaphroditus had long been a symbol of androgyny or effeminacy, and was depicted in Greco-Roman arts as a female body with male genitals.
