He Bo 河伯 is the Chinese god of the Yellow River (Huang He), which is China's second longest stretch of water (and probably the most muddiest).
Origins and Worship[]
Although the Great Da-Yu took care of the great flood, the river was still prone to flooding, so an enthusiastic mortal named Fengyi (Otherwise known as Pingyi) decided to tie rocks to his back and jump into the river as a form of supreme sacrifice.

And as a reward for his pains he was then granted immortality and given the title of "God of the Yellow River", and to follow in his example, it was made custom to throw a young virgin into the very same river each year on the anniversary of his death, though this custom has appeared to have died out as time passed.
