H₂éwsōs also known as Haéusōs is the Proto-Indo-European Goddess of dawn, she is the daughter of Dyēus the king of the gods and sister of Perkʷūnos the thunder god, her role was bring the dawn to the world, her descendants in the later Indo-Europeans Religions are Aušrinė, Auseklis and Prende.

Mythology[]

Sun Goddess[]

In Baltic mythology, the goddess Saulė has some elements of dawn deity, at some point in Baltic mythology, the cult of H₂éwsōs was syncretized with the cult of Seh₂ul. This shows possible evidence of one of if not the first case of syncretism in the history.

Colors[]

H₂éwsōs was associated with the colors: Gold, saffron, and red or crimson, because her descendants are related with those colors, Eos wears a golden-sandal and she is also 'saffron-robed' in some Homeric poems, Ushas wears crimson or gold because in the Rigveda the dawn is gold-coloured and the Baltic goddess Saulė is also described and portrayed as waking up 'red' or in a 'red tree' during the morning. However Saulé in some texts is described wearing clothes in red, gold, silver and white.

The Russian folklorist Alexander Afanasyev said the next about Zorya, in Slavic tradition it is varied between culture; but in Serbian folklore she is described as a maiden in a silver throne in the water, her legs are yellow with gold arms, in Russia Zorya is invoked as the "red maiden", sitting in her golden chair and holds a silver disk or mirror, in some variations the maiden Zorya sits on a white-hot stone call Alatyr.

Epithets[]

  • *Diwós Dʰuǵh₂tḗr (Daughter of Dyēus), is cognates with these titles; 'Daughter of Heaven' an epithet for Ushas, and with 'Daughter of Zeus (that is presumably a title of Eos, in pre-Homeric Greek), 'Daughter of Dievas' is an epithet of Saulė the sun goddess from Baltic mythology. In Albanian folklore the goddess Prende is regarded as the daughter of the sky god Zojz.
  • Eos in pre-Homeric Greek times had as Epithet 'early-born' or 'born in the morning', it may be that H₂éwsōs has an Epithet about her nature as a eternal rebirth deity.

Legacy[]

Japanese religion[]

Japanese mythology is not related with any other Proto-Mythology, because linguistically Japanese is not connected with any other language, but it is very possible that the Japanese are related with the Proto-Turkic Peoples, as some Proto-Japanese words sounds similar to Proto-Turkish, which explains the similarity between the Japanese word for heaven Ten with the Turco-Mongol word Tengri. But there exists evidence of possible Proto-Indo-European influence, due to the parallels of the myth of Susanoo-no-Mikoto vs Yamata no Orochi with the many Indo-Europeans myths like Thor vs Jörmungandr in Norse mythology, and Greek mythology has Heracles vs Lernaean Hydra and in Vedic mythology there was the fight of Indra vs Vrita. This is vey important because It is very probable that the Japanese Goddess Ame-no-Uzume has been influenced by the Vedic Goddess Ushas and by extension with H₂éwsōs, because both goddesses share many similarities such as the cave, and are related with the heavens, show her breasts as a sign of friendship, besides this there exists evidence of a linguistic connection between Ushas and Uzume.

Other Goddess[]

The Georgian Goddess Dali has connections with many Indo-Europeans Goddesses ,like Eos and Aurora, and besides this she had a sacred animal being in her case the goats, and had a lustful side like some dawn goddesses too.

Modern Indo-Iranian cults[]

Ushas is still worshipped in many parts of the Indian subcontinent like India, Bihar and Nepal, however there doesn´t seem to exist any evidence of a modern cult or cults dedicated to the Persian Husbam.
