Gabriel is a major archangel found in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, where he typically plays the role of God's messenger.

In the Hebrew Bible[]

Gabriel's first appearance is in the Book of Daniel of the Hebrew Bible (Christian Old Testament). In the story, Gabriel acts as God's messenger by assisting Daniel in interpreting his vision of the ram and the he-goat:

15 When I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I tried to understand it. Then someone appeared standing before me, having the appearance of a man, 16 and I heard a human voice by the Ulai, calling, “Gabriel, help this man understand the vision.” 17 So he came near where I stood, and when he came, I became frightened and fell prostrate. But he said to me, “Understand, O mortal, that the vision is for the time of the end.”

-The Book of Daniel, 8:15-17 (NRSV)

In the New Testament[]

Gabriel also appears in the Gospel of Luke, where he is sent by God to announce to Zechariah that his wife Elizabeth is pregnant with John the Baptist. When Zechariah questions how it could be possible for his wife, who was older in age, could become pregnant, Gabriel makes him mute until his child is born:

8 Zechariah said to the angel, “How can I know that this will happen? For I am an old man, and my wife is getting on in years.” 19 The angel replied, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20 But now, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time, you will become mute, unable to speak, until the day these things occur.”

-The Gospel of Luke, 1:18-20 (NRSV)

Six months later, Gabriel appears to the Virgin Mary and announces that she is pregnant with Jesus. This event is referred to as the Annunciation:

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30 The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34 Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God.

-The Gospel of Luke 1:26-35 (NRSV)
