Devas (also known as angels, celestial warriors, or servants of the gods) are a humanoid race of divine origin, with radiant skin and feathered wings. They are devoted to the cause of good and often fight against the forces of evil, especially demons and devils. Devas are created by various tabletop game designers (in Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, and others), then adapted to different settings and genres.

Origins[]

Devas first appeared in the 1979 edition of Dungeons and Dragons, as a type of angel that served the gods of law and good. They were inspired by the Hindu concept of devas, which are benevolent beings that inhabit the higher realms of existence. Devas have since been featured in various editions of Dungeons and Dragons, as well as other tabletop games such as Pathfinder, Shadowrun, GURPS, and Forsaken Worlds. Devas are usually portrayed as powerful allies or adversaries for the player characters, depending on their alignment and goals.

Characteristics[]

Devas are human-like in appearance, but with some notable differences. They have glowing skin that ranges from pale to dark, depending on their origin and personality. They have large wings that sprout from their shoulders, usually white, but sometimes colored or patterned. They have eyes that shine with inner light, and hair that flows like silk. Devas are often adorned with jewelry, symbols, or weapons that reflect their allegiance and role.

Devas are immortal beings that do not age or die of natural causes. They can be killed by violence, but they reincarnate after a short time, retaining their memories and personality. However, if a deva falls from grace and becomes corrupted by evil, they lose their immortality and become fallen devas, also known as rakshasas. Fallen devas can be redeemed by performing acts of good or seeking forgiveness from their former allies.

Devas have a strong sense of duty and honor, and follow a strict code of conduct. They are loyal to their patrons, whether they are gods, archangels, or other celestial beings. They are also compassionate and benevolent towards mortals, especially those who share their ideals and values. Devas often act as guardians, mentors, or messengers for those who seek their aid or guidance.

Devas have various abilities that reflect their divine nature. They can fly with their wings, communicate telepathically, sense evil or magic, heal wounds or diseases, create light or fire, and resist harmful effects. They are also skilled in combat, using weapons or spells that suit their style and preference. Devas are especially adept at fighting against creatures of the lower planes, such as demons and devils.

Variants[]

There are many types of devas in different tabletop games, each with their own traits and functions. Some of the most common ones are:

  • Astral devas: These devas are the messengers and diplomats of the celestial hierarchy. They travel between the planes to deliver orders, negotiate treaties, or report events. They have silver skin and wings, and wear blue robes.
  • Monadic devas: These devas are the protectors and defenders of the natural order. They patrol the borders of the planes to prevent invasions or disruptions. They have bronze skin and wings, and wear green armor.
  • Movanic devas: These devas are the warriors and generals of the celestial army. They lead the battles against the enemies of good and law. They have gold skin and wings, and wear red clothing.
  • Planetar: These devas are the commanders and advisors of the celestial lords. They oversee large-scale operations and missions that require great wisdom and power. They have green skin and wings, and wear white garments.
  • Solar: These devas are the champions and heroes of the celestial realm. They are the most powerful and respected among their kind, capable of challenging even gods or archdevils. They have golden skin and wings, and wear black cloaks.
