In Roman mythology, Cloacina was the goddess who presided over the Cloaca Maxima, Rome's main sewage system. The contruction of the drain began under Rome's fifth legendary king; Tarquinius Priscus and finished under Tarquinius Superbus, it's seventh and final king. Cloacina was later associated with Venus and came to be an aspect of her; the shrine to Venus Cloacina was directly above the Cloaca Maxima. Cloacina was also associated with hygiene due to her role as purifier of Roma (her name comes from the verb "cloare": "to purify".
