Clio or Cleo (Greek: Κλειώ), is one of the Nine Muses of Olympus. She is the Muse of History. She is usually portrayed with a scroll or with books. She is sometimes considered the mother of Hymenaios or of Hyacinthos, the son of Pierus.
Modern Depictions[]
Clio, sometimes referred to as "the Proclaimer", is often depicted with an open scroll, book, or set of tablets.
Legend[]
Like all muses, Clio is the daughter of Zeus and the Titaness Mnemosyne, goddess of memory. Along with her sisters, the Muses, she is considered a resident of Mount Helicon or Mount Parnassos. Other common locations for the Muses are Pieria in Thessaly, near Mount Olympus.
She had a son, Hyacinthus, by one of several kings, varying depending on which version of the story you read - with Pierus or King Oebalus of Sparta, or King Amyclas, progenitor of the people of Amyclae , inhabitants of Sparta. Some sources say that she is also the mother of Hymenaeus.
