Chryses approaches Agamemnon in an attempt to ransom Chryseis

Chryses, in Greek mythology, was a priest of Apollo. His daughter, Chryseis, was taken as a prisoner of Agamemnon during the Trojan War. Chryses was refused to ransom his daughter and, as a result, Apollo sent a plague to the Greek army. Agamemnon had Odysseus return Chryseis to her father, ending the plague. However, to compensate himself for this loss, Agamemnon took Achilles' prisoner Briseis, as his own. His name means "golden", possibly referring to his attempted ransom of Chryseis. Later writers describe Chryses as the brother of Briseus, making Chryseis and Briseis cousins.
