Odysseus returns Chryseis

Chryseis, in Greek mythology, was the daughter of Chryses, a priest of Apollo. She was taken as a prisoner of Agamemnon during the Trojan War. Chryses was refused to ransom his daughter and, as a result, Apollo sent a plague to the Greek army. Agamemnon had Odysseus return Chryseis to her father, ending the plague. However, to compensate himself for this loss, Agamemnon took Achilles' prisoner Briseis, as his own. Chryseis' name refers to the fact that she is the daughter of Chryses. Later writers describe Chryses as the brother of Briseus, making Chryseis and Briseis cousins. In medieval myth, her character was redeveloped as Cressida.
