Shield-maidens (Old Norse: skjaldmeyjar) are the female warriors in Norse mythology and Scandinavian folklore. They are often mentioned in sagas such as Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks and in Gesta Danorum. The Valkyries may have been based on such shield-maidens.
