This category is for creatures that are found in medieval bestiaries.
A bestiary is a compendium of beasts. Originating in the ancient world, bestiaries were made popular in the Middle Ages in illustrated volumes that described various animals, plants, and stones.
The natural history and illustration of each beast was accompanied by a moral lesson. This reflected the belief that every living thing had a purpose in God's creation, and it's own special meaning ordained by God.
