In Greek mythology, Callisto was a mortal young woman of Lycaon. A follower of Artemis, she took a vow to remain a virgin. To have her, Zeus disguised himself as Artemis herself to lure her into his embrace. Callisto was then turned into a bear and set amongst the stars. She is the bear-mother of the Arcadians through her son Arcas.
Callisto, one of the planet Jupiter's four Jovian moons (along with Io, Ganymede and Europa) was named after her.
