Caelus also know as Coelus or Caelum was a primal god of the sky and the King of the Gods in Roman myth and theology, iconography, and literature (compare cælum, the Latin word for "sky" or "the Universe", whence English "celestial"). He is who rules the cosmos centuries ago, he´s still present and able to see the kingdom which once belonged to him. Caelus has a brother called Pontus, who is the primordial god of seas and oceans, Caelus is a member of the Primagenera (the Roman primordial gods).
Syncretism[]
Romans would identify the Levantine Yahweh with Caelus. Curiously Yahweh also was identified with Jupiter as well by Romans.
Family[]
Caelus, similar to, his Greek counterpart is the son and consort of a Earth Goddess, but some sources states that Caelus is just the husband of Terra rather than her son, because in some versions Caelus´s mother was Dies (Hemera) and his father was Ether. But all sources say his children were: Saturn and Ops. In some accounts Caelus and Dies were the parents of Mercury. In the Hellenistic narrative Caelus and Terra were also the parents of Janus.
Etymology[]
The name of Caelus unlike his Greek counterpart Uranus, does not have a Proto-Indo-European origin, but the name Caelus presumably comes from the Etruscan god of fire Calu.
