Benzaiten Kawanabe Kyosai

Benzaiten by Kawanabe Kyosai

Benzaiten is a syncretic Japanese deity originating from the Dharmic goddess Saraswati, who is particularly prominent in Hinduism and certain sects of Buddhism. Like her Dharmic counterpart, Benzaiten is the Goddess of Knowledge and the Arts; however, she is additionally the Goddess of Wealth, Water, Fortune, and Femininity.

She is one of the Seven Lucky Gods and is often depicted as a woman playing a traditional Japanese lute (biwa). Benzaiten is strongly associated with water, particularly the sea, and is frequently shown with serpents or sea dragons as her companions. Worship of Benzaiten arrived in Japan during the sixth through eighth centuries. Benzaiten was also syncretized with Japanese kami, and adopted into the Shinto religion, and there are several Shinto shrines dedicated to her.
