Asteria is the Titan goddess of nocturnal oracles and the island of Delos. She was the daughter of Coeus and Phoebe, making her a sister of Leto, the mother of Apollo and Artemis by Zeus and Lelantos, the father of Aura by Periboea. Asteria's own husband was her cousin Perses, the son of Crius and Eurybia. Their only child was a daughter; Hecate, the goddess of witchcraft.
Etymology[]
Asteria derives from the word "aster", meaning star.

In Greek mythology[]
Pursuit by Zeus[]
In some accounts, after the Titanomachy and Perses' imprisonment, Zeus tried to rape Asteria in the form of an eagle. She fled into the sea, where she turned herself into a quail and, later became the island of Ortygia. She became associated with Delos, an island close to Ortygia, where her sister gave birth. Hera, despite being mad, did not try to hurt Asteria, due to the Titaness' successful attempt to flee Zeus.
