Anna, or Anna Perenna was the sister of Dido, the founder of Carthage. After Dido's death, Carthage was attacked by Numidians. Because of this Anna fled to the settlement of Aeneas, her sister's lover. However, Aeneas' wife Lavinia, was jealous of Anna. Anna was warned by her sister's spirit. She fled the town but drowned in the river Numicus, where she was deified. This reflects Aeneas' own death; after he died, his mother Aphrodite/Venus asked Zeus/Jupiter to make him immortal by cleansing him of his mortality in the river Numicus.
