Anat is a goddess of war in ancient Egyptian mythology. She was adopted from Semitic myth into Egyptian culture after the arrival of the Hyksos peoples. She gained a consort; Set.

Mythology[]

origins[]

Ana´s origins is unclear, but many people believe that Anat have her origins in the old Babylonian goddess Ḫanat, because sound like and presumably both Anat and Ḫanat have them in the same proto-semetic root.

In Ugarit[]

In Ugarit Anat was both the sister and wife of Baal-Hadad, in the Baal´s cycle Anat will kill to her brother Mawt, and later she revived to Hadad.

Epithets[]

Anat was an important deity both in Egypt like Ugarit, she also have many many epithets in her honor, even her cult was important for the ancient Hebrews:

  • Virgin.
  • Maiden.
  • Anat-Yahu: the wife of Yahu (God).

In the Hebrew bible[]

Unlike with others Semetics deities like Astarte, Baal and Dagon, Anat is not mentioned in the Hebrew bible rather instead its mentions a ruler call "Shamgar, son of Anath"
