Alcmene was a mortal woman that gave birth to Heracles (Hercules/Hercle), son of Zeus (Jupiter/Tinia). She was married to Amphitryon and was faithful to him. She refused Zeus (Jupiter/Tinia) until he disguised himself as her husband. Both she and her husband were both descendants of Perseus as his grandchildren. With Amphityron, she was mother to Iphicles, the father of Iolaus, Heracles' assistant in his labours. Iphicles died in battle against King Hippocoon of Sparta, aiding his half-brother. her Roman counterpart was "Alcmena" (Latin: ALCVMENA "Alcumena").
