Agni (Sanskrit: अग्नि) is the Hindu god of fire, sacrifices and priests, acting as the channel for offerings.

Characteristics[]

Agni is represented with two heads, one of which symbolizes immortality. His mount is a ram.

Family[]

He is the son of Aditi or Brahma and husband of Svaha, the daughter of Daksha.

Etymology[]

The name Agni come from the word ag, which means 'to writhe' or 'to twist around' according to the Inadi-sutra. But Agni also comes from the Proto-Indo-European word *H₁n̥gʷnis.

Origins[]

The origins of Agni is unclear, many theorize that Agni like other Hindu gods, like Varuna and Indra, have a Proto-Indo-European origin based on them. In particular Agni is believed to come from the Indo-European god *H₁n̥gʷnis. Others believe that Agni could have his origins in the ancient Pre-Vedic or the Indus Valley Civilization's traditions.

Agni has been important in temple architecture. He is typically present in the southeast corner of a Hindu temple.
